Vanish
In the article “Vanish”
writer Evan Ratliff tries to go off the grid while a group of jobless,
tech-savvy hunters fight to find him, for five thousand dollars.
Really guys? 744 man hours for 5,000 dollars? was the internet down?
The challenge
was Evan had to stay off the grid fora month, which his editor agreed to for
the sake of Evan’s article.
The
article itself was stupidly exciting, Highlighting Evan’s addiction to dangers,
and close-shaves. Evan spent two months planning his disappearance, but even
with all the planning Evan was hardly the meticulously careful evader, often taking big risks
that if I was hiding I would not. Then again if I was writing the article it
would be about how I spent a month in basements all over the country fighting
hobos for survival and respect, so essentially it would be better.
Basically the plot of Condemned 2, without that Hadouken stupidity
This article’s
thesis of a regular person going off the grid, without getting caught, seems
really possible. This article proves if you’re dedicated enough, and have some
resources to burn, you can stay off the grid, as long as you stop your bad
habit of dancing in front of security cameras. Evan from a scientific
stand-point was a horrible subject, as he started to break down from his
self-induced-exile, like a girl.There are people who need to go off the grid;
they are more desperate, and more dedicated, trading human contact for survival
simply because the stakes are much higher.
Probably the highest they will ever be
It
is highly possible to stay anonymous online, but technically speaking it’s also
illegal to use fake names as stated in the Computer Fraud and
Abuse Act. Legally you aren’t allowed
to have false names on the internet, but that doesn’t stop every YouTube user
from logging in as “Ben Dover”. Like reality my presence on the internet
isvirtually non-existent. If you Google search my name, at best you might find
my Facebook page, my blog, and my extensive work with JonAnderson…Allegedly.
"Zamran is coming" great now everybody is copying my neighborhood chant
In regards to using the internet as
a tool to connect with family, and loved ones I haven’t had much success simply
because I don’t care for such things. I have however used this powerful tool
effectively by stalking my old crushes, and finding out where Taylor Swift is at
any given moment (New York City).
Thats right Katie distract her with your wi... just distract her
On the internet no one is anonymous
anymore, people can trace Skype calls, find your address through your IP, and
even get close personal details from your Facebook if you don’t prevent it. To
any sane person, going off the grid seems logical in a society where my acquaintance constantly threatens to
come over to my house, boasting he got the address from our Skype conversation, even though we never speak through skype.
When the internet becomes as dangerous as the real world, we need to rethink
our uses and need of it.
Chatroulette became a lot more like russian roulette all of a sudden :/
